Truvia® rebiana is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener made with the best tasting part of the stevia plant.
Stevia is a plant (specifically, a member of the chrysanthemum family) native to portions of northeastern Paraguay. It has been used to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years.
Learn about the history of stevia with this timeline.
Unlike most stevia-based sweeteners, which are typically a mixture of many components from the stevia leaf, Truvia® natural sweetener is made with rebiana, the best tasting part of the stevia leaf. It is the same in consistency, quality and taste each and every time.
Yes. Rebiana comes from the leaf. The leaves are harvested, dried and steeped in water (similar to making tea) to remove the sweet tasting glycosides. Rebiana is purified from the plant and other components in the leaf. During this purification process, rebiana does not undergo any chemical change. Cargill isolated the best tasting part of the plant Rebaudiside A (one of nine glycocisdes within stevia) to develop rebiana.
It basically comes down to taste. Some people prefer the taste of natural sweeteners as opposed to artificial ones. Some prefer the origin too. Truvia® natural sweetener is natural and versatile, which makes it something everyone can enjoy.
Rebiana (the generic name for Truvia® natural sweetener), erythritol and natural flavors.
Erythritol is a natural bulk sweetener that has zero sugar, zero calories and zero aftertaste. It does not promote tooth decay and is a good choice for people with diabetes because it does not affect glycemic index. It is about 60 to 70 percent as sweet as sugar, provides bulk to products and masks the aftertaste of intense sweeteners. Unlike other sugar alcohols, erythritol does not produce gastrointestinal side effects in normally consumed quantities.
Detailed information is available in the All About Erythritol section
Erythritol may be found in some foods and beverages that contain Truvia® natural sweetener but it is not a 'required' ingredient. Truvia® natural sweetener can be used in combination with other sweeteners or sweetener systems depending on the food or beverage.
Yes, diabetic individuals can use Truvia® natural sweetener. Clinical studies have shown that daily consumption of 1,000 mg of rebiana, equivalent to drinking eight 8-ounce servings of rebiana sweetened beverage every day, for 16 weeks did not affect blood sugar control and was well tolerated in people with type 2 diabetes. Truvia® natural sweetener has no effect on the glycemic index.
Pregnant and nursing women can safely use Truvia® natural sweetener. Safety studies published in the peer reviewed scientific journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, found rebiana to be safe with no negative effects on general health, reproduction, fertility, growth or development of offspring.
Erythritol, the carrier for rebiana, has been clinically demonstrated to be tooth friendly, not causing tooth decay. Preliminary evidence strongly suggests that rebiana is also tooth friendly, not causing tooth decay.
Published safety studies have demonstrated that rebiana had no effects on general health, reproduction, fertility, growth, or development. Rebiana is generally recognized as safe for use in foods and beverages for use as a general purpose sweetener. This regulatory designation means that rebiana is generally recognized as safe for use in foods that are commonly consumed by children, such as yogurts, cereals, and beverages.
The Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for steviol glycosides is 4 mg/kg/day on a steviol basis. Rebiana is highly purified and this ADI would translate to about 12 mg/kg/day. The ADI is equivalent to about 29 packets or eight 8-oz rebiana-sweetened beverages daily. The Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) is formulated by assessing heavy and average users. The EDI for rebiana is 1.3 mg/kg/day for the average consumer. This is more than the daily consumption selected for clinical studies.
